Marketing Associate, Simon & Schuster
I learned the fundamentals of promoting a book, working closely with Simon & Schuster editors to produce marketing material for their titles, including reading samples, advertising and publicity info as well as sales histories.
Linda Clark Associates
As an associate foreign rights scout, I spoke regularly with agents, editors and foreign rights representatives to learn about new American book projects that might be of interest to European clients. I wrote and delivered weekly newsletters about upcoming titles and publishing trends.
Le Bureau du Livre Français
"The French Book Office" was funded by the French government to promote and sell French fiction and nonfiction to American and British publishers. As an associate agent, I proposed translation projects to publishers and helped research and produce the annual catalog. I negotiated translation deals for prominent writers such as Julia Kristeva, Annie Ernaux, Leïla Sebbar, Annie LeBrun, and Leslie Kaplan.
Foreign Rights Editor, Arnoldo Mondadori Editore
Arnoldo Mondadori is like the Random House of Italy. I worked with the head fiction editor in the New York office to acquire American titles for translation into Italian. Each week I read and reviewed two to three manuscripts and developed a strong sense of the contemporary American fiction market. I also scouted for small press titles, alternative fiction and nonfiction, and wrote weekly newsletters about new American book releases.
