When surfer Ashley Lloyd looks back on her childhood, she remembers being out in the ocean, looking back at the land and wondering what people who didn't surf did. Today, she's as passionate as ever about surfing, but she balances her wave time with time spent on dry land teaching others to surf and creating her own green line of surfboards. This summer, she appears in the new surf movie Dear & Yonder along with a cast of other women doing equally amazing things in and out of the water. Read the article
Caroline Hwang: Comfort in Quilting March 2009
Caroline Hwang sits in her Brooklyn studio, sewing together a cotton quilt. She'’s in her groove as music drifts through the air, her needle diving and surfacing to the soulful sounds of Bon Iver or the poppy beats of Feist. With quick steady stitches she pieces together bits of fabric and pictures begin to emerge. Hwang’s quilts are fabric paintings where pale-skinned girls with feathers in their long black hair play in the forest, gliding in canoes on dark water and hiding from bears. A band of Indian maidens? Girl scouts? Read the article
